Autumn in Tuscany: Fall Grocery Shopping Guide

Autumn is the best time to Visit Tuscany, for one reason: The Food.

Here are 5 Fall foods to add to your shopping list when you head to the market!

5 Tuscan Foodie Favorites for Autumn:

1. Olives & Olive Oil

We bought these fresh green olives to cure at home, and if you know anything about Tuscany you know that November means one thing: Green Gold. Who else is excited for some bright green Olio Nuovo??

2. Porcini Mushrooms

Mushroom season is at an end, and in the past few months we’ve made the most of it with plenty of gorgeous Porcini mushrooms. Many lunches these days have simply been grilled porcini with some olive oil and salt. Depending on the weather you can add these to your grocery list as early as late August, and as late as early November (it made sense, I promise)

3. Pomegranates

Just because summer is over doesn’t mean you should forget about fruit! Pomegranates, the funnest and messiest fruit to eat, come into season in the fall.

4. Chestnuts

You’ll find “Castagne” everywhere in the fall. Perfect for dessert recipes or just a simple roasted snack. Chestnuts vendors pop up all over the place during Autumn in Tuscany, but they’re easy to make at home so grab some at the market!

5. Truffles

During Autumn in Tuscany you’ll see truffle dishes on every seasonal restaurant menu around. Pictured here is a truffle honey that came on a cheese platter. Truffles are always a bit pricey, but take advantage of the fall season to find some at pretty reasonable prices.

Where to Shop:

No need to go to the supermarket! Support local farmers and spend less by heading to Mercato Sant’Amrogio, Mercato Centrale, or any number of local fruit & vegetable shops. Remember to brush up on your Italian food vocabulary! Unlike the supermarket, you’ll need to tell the vendors what you want and they’ll bag and weight it for you. If you touch the food you will be reprimanded. If like me you take food close-ups with your phone, then you’ll just get weird looks. But its worth it.
